The media has been reporting that we are in the midst of a viral ‘epidemic’ with thousands of cases of Norovirus, often known as the “winter vomiting virus” in Britain at the start of the year. This virus is often around during the winter months, but this year, according to media reports, thousands of people have suffered from the bug in the past few weeks, with NHS Direct reporting over 13,000 calls in 24 hours and hospital wards being shut down to stop the spread.

Eye Infections – Kids Bring Home More Than Homework From School

Is your child ready to go to school? You worry about coughs and colds that they will bring home, but what about eye infections? Infections of the eye can occur at any time of the year; not just when it’s time to go back to school. However, so many of the infections of the eye are contagious so being around more kids in school lends itself to more irritations. Infections, irritations, and allergy issues are all common in school age children. An eye infection in a school age child is usually minor and can be treated with home remedies and without seeing the eye doctor or ophthalmologist. I am not a physician, just a mom that has seen these problems all throughout the school year. It is rare, but if your child has a serious eye infection or it doesn’t seem to be clearing after you have done some common sense things; they should see the doctor immediately.

Allergies

Allergies are disorders of the immune system, which when a foreign substance that is normally harmless in most people causes an extreme reaction within the body. Contact can be with the skin, lungs, oesophagus, mouth, stomach and intestine and can cause a reaction to those organs plus the musculo-skeletal, genoto-urinary system, bowel, cardio-vascular, nose, eyes and brain. The substances that cause these reactions are called allergens and the person who suffers from this, is said to be allergic to the substance.

Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) - The Heroic Antioxidant

Vitamin C or L-Ascorbic Acid is not manufactured by the body. It must be obtained through diet or supplementation. It is a water soluble vitamin found in the juices of fruits and vegetables and readily leaches into the cooking water of boiled foods. It is very sensitive to oxidation and is destroyed whenever foods are cut or torn which exposes the cells to air. Alkalies such as baking soda or antacids destroy ascorbic acid.

Type 1 Diabetes

The insulin that produces cells of the pancreas when destroyed is called Type 1 Diabetes. This term was once referred to Juvenile diabetes as it struck people less than twenty years of age. The hormone that will allow glucose to the enter the body cells is the beta cells of the pancreas this produces little or no insulin. The glucose is then used as fuel.
